New Zealand: A pathway to citizenship like no other

To kick off this week, we have a residency by investment scheme to share with you that is sure to jump right to the top of your potential candidates for relocation. New Zealand is made up of two large islands, the North and South Islands, and a number of smaller periphery islands situated in the South Pacific Ocean. The nation is very well connected considering its relative isolation, closest to Australia over 1,500km away, and the capital city Wellington is found on the North Island, immediately highlighting itself as a hub for those of you looking to relocate to New Zealand’s urban centres.

What is residency by investment?

In short, you are able to fast track visa processes and times to citizenship in a number of countries across almost every continent in the world. How? By making an investment! This either comes in the form of a donation, real estate acquisition, or through business investment, following which you receive a visa which is typically renewable and grants you residency in the nation where you made your initial investment.

And why should I choose New Zealand?

This island nation is home to some of the most diverse landscapes on the planet, providing endless opportunity for travel and exploration for adventurers with experience, and those with none. This idea of there being something for everyone translates to the locations on offer to you in terms of laying the foundations of your new life, with rural and urban regions exhibiting their own pull factors depending on your desired landscape.

The benefits don’t stop here though, with a high quality of life and world-renowned friendly population, New Zealand is a fantastic option for individuals and families, meaning there is no reason to take the country off your shortlist of relocation candidates! Also, with English as the widely spoken language, communication barriers are largely non-existent and should help with your settling in process.

What are the steps?

Let’s divide this section to avoid any confusion, there are two options for investment, the Investor 1 and Investor 2 visas.

Investor 1 residency visa: NZ$10 million over a 3-year period, no limit/minimum requirement on age, language or business experience.

Steps: Make your application and wait up to 6 months. Once approved, you make your investment and receive your visa. Easy. Now, you will need to spend 44 or more days a year in New Zealand in year 2 and 3 of your visa to then renew it for an additional 2 years.

Investor 2 residency visa: NZ$3 million for businesspeople under 65 years old in an approved venture held for 4 years, assessed on points-based eligibility similar to other countries. In this case English is a requirement, either as a native language or with a passed English proficiency test.

Steps: Send your background to New Zealand (details, experience in business, proof of funds), if approved you can apply for residency within a 4-month window. If approved, you will know within 18 months and will receive your visa following your investment being made. Once the 4 years are up, you will have to show you still have your initial investment and that you spent 146 days of years 2, 3 and 4 in New Zealand.

In the case of the second visa, an acceptable investment includes government bonds, firms with a BBB rating or higher, banks, or finance companies. Additionally, for those of you looking to obtain citizenship, proof of 1,350 days of residency in the nation over 5 years and 246 days per year of each of those 5 years spend in the nation will be sufficient to allow you to apply!
